T.M.Soundararajan

In my village, Semmangudi, when I was studying in school, we had only radio, a big one which looked like, half the TV. We were restricted to listening nadaswaram or any classical or Sunday movies (oli chittiram in Tamil). TiruvilayAdal, Gowravam, saraswathi sabadham, veerapAndia kattabomman were some of the movies whose dialogues, I still remember because of listening in Radio many times.

Once while tuning the radio, I came across a stubborn voice singing “karpanai enrAlum” on lord MurugA. I was stunned by the beauty of this kriti and rendering. When I came to it was TMS, I fell in love with him instantly.

His passing away on May 25 is an irreparable loss to the music world. Whenever I think of TMS, I always wanted to write top 10 songs or 20 songs. But thinking differently, I select very few songs to analyse why he is the best !

I somehow feel his songs with LR Eswari giving “humming” to the song- the song “Ennirandu padhinAru vayasu” in the Film Annai illam. Though Sivaji looked weird in “suites” which is not the attire for love song, his lip movement and his eyes pouring love on his “love lady” were a class. Muthuraman, another actor looked novice in this song. But what a rendering by TMS ?

kallellAm mAnicka kallAgumA- another beauty form film Alaya mani where LR Eswari’s humming voice added beauty for this entire song. If you listen to 1000 times, u will not feel tired.

Going off from TMS, I somehow fell soulful listening to “humming” coupled song. Whether kAlaiyum nEyE (Then nilavu) in the rAGa hamsanandhi….

Back to TMS, listen to this song “nAn Anayittal” in Enga veetu pillai. One would get strength and brim with courage and started loving MGR, evergreen hero of Tamil Cinema. Even this generation youngsters like many songs of TMS. My daughter who is 14 years loves this song.

Another song which is memorable is “NeeyE enakku enrum” in balE pAndiya. It was set in the raagam sudha dhanyasi. What a rendering by TMS and lip movement by ShivAji. The Shivaji-MR RAdha duo created havoc in that scene.

“mAdhavi ponmayiLal thogai”- in the film iru malargal, another shivaji starrer, set in rAga karaharapriyA was another beauty. This rAgA has not been explored in cinema. TMS carries this superbly.

Who will forget his gowrimanOhari rAgam “pAttum nAnE” in Tiruvilaiyadal. K.V.MahadEvan-kannadAsan-TMS trio created history in this film and even today, you stop and listen even it is played in a road-side shop.

In karNan, there is a group song- in the Ragam-Hindolam, hamsanandi, darbari kannada and at last TMS sings 4 liners – ‘Aayiram karangal” – My goodness, the chroreograph and karNan’s prayer to Lord surya and the rendition is top class.

In duet song- there are two songs- madi meedhu talai vaithu- in Annai illam where shivaji pairs with devikA and the song portrays the intimacy of the couple. The second one is “kumarip pennin” in Enga veetup pillai”. The majestic MGR and her ever green lover sarOja Devi with beautiful eyes. Close your eyes and listen, it was the perfect duet dream song which is lovable even today.

Philosophical song- sad songs- are plenty.

TMS has created a niche for himself. Like PB Srinivas and T.K. Ramamurthy (duo of Viswanathan Ramamurthy) who also passed away recently, his contribution is Immeasurable.

His bhakti to Lord Muruga and his bhakthi songs are invaluable and one has to be lucky to be born in 1960s 1970s to understand this. No TV, No Mobile phones, no Apps. With frequent power cuts and only Radio, we spent golden days listening to good music like TMS and carnatic music of stalwarts.

Present generation is really unfortunate to have missed this.

Thank you TMS avargalE, You have gone to the abode of Lord Muruga to sing “online”. Thanks for enlighten us. Cinema songs can easily be bifurcated into pre-TMS, Post-TMS.
