Music Academy

19.12.12

The first question, I asked myself before the start of this concert, Will he complete the concert on time or not ?

Yes, he completed the concert exactly at 9.30 PM. Hats off to AR for sticking to his time. Last time, MA, he was reprimanded for going beyond the 9.30 PM. I always wonder this youngster’s capability of singing 3 hours/4 hours non-stop. But sticking to the discipline of the Academy keeps one more feather in his cap.

Unfortunately, this is loss to rasikAs. He had to wrap it up his RTP without any merit to it. He made the main and RTP combined. This made the RTP more significant. But, rasikas missed ther RTP as it was “truncated”. He announced this before starting the pallavi. “I planned to sing raga mAlika, tAla malikA, but I need to check the time too. Hence, I will try to render it best possible”.

This is also his problem. Knowing his time constraint, he should have restrained to one-rAgA pallavi. Suddenly, he burst in to multiple swara rAgAs without knowing what is happening in the dais? . There is no need for AR to prove his prowess of his vidwat any more. All of the rasikas were watching without blinking their eyes.

This is a small aberration. Otherwise, another scintillating performance. AR does not believe in Quantity but quality. He rendered exactly 5 kritis including varnam and tukkadA. So, it left 3 main kritis. He rendered it with such an amazing control on rAgA and sruti. He produced the bhAvams with his own classicism. It was a serene Wednesday evening inside MA with noises of traffic around the MA, AR started with sahAna varNam.

-Karunimpa-SahAna varnam

-Todi-Alapana followed by vedelanu kodandapAni- a kriti by Tyagarajar in Roopakam. Neraval in “surucira vAdyamulu mrOya surusellaru vinuti seYa”. This kriti narrates the story of Rama and lakshmana, proceeding to forest along with Sage Vishwamitra.

“The meaning of the neraval is “as the splendid musical instruments are sounded, and as all the celestials praise, Lord Kodandapani along with lakshman ....”

The atmosphere is simply the same as Thyagaraja narrated, lovely accompaniments, lovely thodi and above all AR, gifted vocalist of our era.

MohanakalyAni- followed by tAmadham tagadayyA- Lalgudi VR Gopala Iyer kriti. Again he took this rAgam beautifully and he gave a vocal treat to all rasikAs. Swaram on the tAmadham.

karaharapriyA- RTP- what should I say about this ? Just a week back, I could listen to Shnakarabharanam RTP in MFAC by AR and I did not come out of that bliss, here is another RTP in Gana rAga.

To conclude rAmanabhajittAl- mAnd raga kriti by Papanasam Sivan

pavamAna

Now a days, no one takes this big 5 rAgAs as RTP. AR is capable of taking 5 gana rAgAs at a time and rendering it with aplomb. I just witnessed in Bharat Sangeeth Utsav last month in NGS where he rendered- Gowlibandhu, nattakurinji, Bairavi, kalyani, karaharapriya and by the time tani ended at 9.45, I had left. He must have continued some more time.... Remember, the previous night, he performed in Bharath Vidya Bhavan for 3 hours and 15 minutes. No way, a person at his age, must be having this stamina to perform. He is indeed great.

Another great thing is about his accompaniments- this is the team “like Mah santhanam, Nagai Muralidharan and Vellore Ramabhadran”. Except for Ganjira, AR continues with the same team. They know the pulse of AR and vice versa. Mysore srikanth’s performace was equally brilliant. He tried to outwit AS in his violin and in this process, rasikas were fortunate to have an ecstatic experience.

His rendition, I feel, is like this. He starts the rAga and slowly plunges in to it. Then the raga engulfs/swallows up him and it makes AR as his slave. Then the rAga rips AR unless it gets satisfied. The result is a real “kalyAna sAppAdu” to rasikAs.

Personally, I feel if he trims down the rAga AlapanA a bit and concentrates more adding few kritis and keep the time factor under control, he shall be the youngest Sangeetha kalAnidhi.

Sri PSN should be really proud of his disciple.

Ananthakrishnan-Guruvayoor Durai’s disciple is always 10/10. With such complicated kanakkU’s of AR, the response he gives, with a smile, in his mridhangam, is awesome. Bravo AK
