STEP OUT TO ACHIEVE

Dear Youth of the World,
A ship is very safe in harbor. Can we keep all the ships just in the harbor always? They have to be taken to dangerous sea-routes if at all they should serve any purpose. We cannot change the powerful under-water currents, or stop storms and tsunamis and ensure a cent per cent safety and security to the seafarers. Great achievements and adventures have been made by talented and courageous people, only in spite of the potential dangers.
Helen Keller has said: “Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”
When his three cousin sisters died of pregnancies within a period of three months, Govindappa Venkataswamy of Madurai decided to become a gynecological expert and serve womankind. Soon after he came out of the medical school rheumatoid arthritis crippled him. In spite of years of hospitalization, he could come out only with some physical disabilities that disqualified him for gynecology. Any ordinary person would have given up. But Venkataswamy chose the field of ophthalmology and opened an 11-bed eye hospital in Madurai. He needed specially made instruments to suit his crippled hands. But his passion and high spirit enabled him to overcome all those obstacles; in the first year itself, he performed 5000 surgeries! The famous Dr. V now has clinics in which 200000 surgeries are performed in a year! They are one of the largest single-providers of eye-surgery in the world. His clinics are not run on donations or government grants; 70% of the patients do not pay anything or close to nothing for the service. But the clinics are managed profitably. This is because Dr. V has succeeded in making the operations so fast, efficient and cheap! He is confident of extending his service throughout the world by franchising!
Dr. V could not prevent what happened to him; but he faced them boldly and changed his response that has enabled him to serve millions of people in his life time. Praising Dr. V, the authors of Success Built to Last say: With his hands hopelessly crippled, you would think he had earned the right to give up. Instead, Dr. V refused to let that interrupt his commitment to save lives. (Success Built to Last by Jerry Porras, Stewart Emery and Mark Thompson – 2007 – ISBN 978-0-452-28870-6)
Let us also remember the words of John Wooden here: Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.
Those who run away from the scene at the drop of a hat can never become achievers. Only those who decide to fight and carry on can attain success in life.
Wishing you all the best,
T Joseph Benziger
